Foster-To-Adopt

Santa Cruz County is very fortunate to have a mandatory spay/neuter ordinance in place. This means that all cats and dogs must be altered before being adopted. If you are adopting a cat or kitten today that has not been spayed or neutered yet, and you live in Santa Cruz County, then you are eligible to take that kitty home TODAY as a Foster-To-Adopt parent!

You will need to fill out the first page of our Foster Care Application, as well as the Adoption Application. Please also read through the Foster-To-Adopt contract and sign. Please let us know what questions you may have before signing.

What does fostering to adopt mean?

Technically your new kitty will still be an ASR animal until altered, but you get to take them home TODAY and bring them to one of our clinics later for their surgery.

What if my new kitty gets sick while I am fostering to adopt?

You would contact Amy our Foster Coordinator at amy@animalshelterrelief.org and we will examine them and provide medical care as needed at our expense and with OUR veterinarian or RVT.

Will I have to pay an additional fee for the surgery?

No, the fee is covered in the tax deductible adoption fee that you are paying today.

How do I make the appointment for the surgery?

Amy will coordinate with you to make the appointment at one of our clinics located in either Watsonville or Santa Cruz. We will try our best to accommodate your schedule, but prepare for an early drop off time (7 or 8 am) and a mid to late afternoon pick up time, the same day. Surgeries are Monday through Friday only, no weekends.
